Fellow Houston Indivisibles,
We’re late in 2019, but there is still plenty to be done as we prepare for the sprint to November of 2020. For our own part, we spent a lot of the last month reorganizing the brand new Indivisible Houston website to make it even easier for you to plug in and get information about what’s happening in Congress and in the Houston community.
Here are just a few actions to take to engage, educate, and resist this week in Houston.
1) CALL FOR IMPEACHMENT
45 said this week that he would refuse to cooperate with an impeachment trial. Call your Senators and your Representative THIS WEEK and DEMAND that the President comply. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.
Find your representatives’ numbers with the new Indivisible Houston Resource Directory.
2) RSVP to our upcoming Indivisible Houston general meeting – SUNDAY – OCTOBER 20th
Join us for the next Indivisible Houston general meeting on ending gun violence Sunday, October 20th from 1 to 4 PM at Hester House located at 2020 Solo Street, Houston, TX 77020.
Snacks and beverages will be provided. All are welcome; RSVP here.
This free training on how to build a more inclusive gun violence prevention movement will be taught by a community member of Community Justice Action Fund, a leader in the movement to prevent gun violence.
3) Study, RSVP, and testify on Redistricting.
Redistricting hearings are taking place all over the State of Texas. Two will take place in Harris County next week. One is Tuesday, October 22nd starting at 3PM at Lone Star College-North Harris, Student Services Building Conference Center in Room 208 located at 2700 W.W. Thorne Drive, Houston, Texas 77073. The other is Wednesday, October 23rd starting at 11AM at Texas Southern University, Roderick R. Paige School of Education, Education Auditorium, located at 3100 Cleburne St, Houston, TX 77004.
These hearings have a huge impact on how our maps are drawn which determines whether or not our elections are fair and whether communities get the resources they need.
Check out Texas Civil Rights Project’s Guide to testifying on Redistricting. Then RSVP for one of the two hearings to take shape either on the North side of Harris County or on the South Side.
4) Call your representative and urge them to strengthen H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act of 2019.
H.R. 3 was introduced last month and is a great step towards making prescription drugs more affordable. However, there are still some key improvements that should be added to protect patients from high launch prices, price spikes, and to ensure more drugs that folks rely on to stay healthy are included in each year’s negotiations. Click here to learn more about potential improvements to the bill and why we’re fighting for them.
That’s all for now. Keep an eye on out for next week’s actions and remember: power belongs to The People.
Daniel J. Cohen
President, Indivisible Houston
