The latest news suggests that Dennis Bonnen of Angleton, Texas is likely to be the next Speaker of the Texas House. His selection would be a disgrace. In a year when voters clearly prefer progressive change and constituents have fought back against racism in Harris County and beyond, Bonnen represents everything there is wrong with the streak of racism and injustice The People are rising up to defeat once and for all. Bonnen’s history was well-outlined by local Houstonian and former state rep candidate Meghan Scoggins in a recent editorial that is worth a read. The summary? His track record ain’t pretty. Here are some of the lowlights:
Bonnen once referred to child Hurricane Katrina refugees as “coonasses”;
He sponsored a Voter ID law so discriminatory it was shot down, violated the Voting Rights Act, and cost taxpayers millions of dollars;
He often no-showed his Higher Education committee meetings in 2011 and whined when not given the committees he wanted;
He tacked an amendment onto a pollution bill that would grant industrial polluters immunity, an amendment so bad the bill’s backers walked away from the bill;
He cozied up to Governor Abbott by sponsoring a property tax change package that changed nothing at all;
He rode into reelection with the backing of anti-education lobbyists Empower Texans in a year when education finance and reform is a rare point of agreement for most Texas legislators. Dennis Bonnen is wrong for Texas. Call and email your representative and tell them to vote against this racist who is especially callous to the needs of hurricane refugees.
